The history of vodka
The first mentions of vodka production in Russia date back to the 15th century, when distillation began to be used to obtain a strong drink based on grain. At that time, vodka was called "bread wine". Vodka gradually became a national drink, and already under Ivan the Terrible, a state monopoly on its production was created.
Although Dmitry Mendeleyev was not the inventor of vodka, his scientific research on the chemistry of solutions became important for understanding the interaction of alcohol and water. In 1865, he defended his doctoral dissertation "On the Combination of Alcohol with Water", where he studied the physical and chemical properties of alcohol solutions. Thanks to his work, it became possible to scientifically substantiate the standards for the strength of vodka.
